It was Nazi weekend on UKTVHistory last weekend, as it has been every weekend since the Red Army reached Berlin. No German, possibly not even Hitler's surely proud mother, has ever showed as much interest in the Nazis as Brits do. Part of the fascination must come from the fact that it happened there, and not here, and so couldn't ever happen here, so we are better than them.
There's a logical problem with that assertion - how do we know it could never happen here? How can we prove that, say, the Nuremberg rallies could not take place here? Nuremberg was chosen for the annual Nazi flag waving bash as it was located in the centre of the Reich. Not a particularly large city, it is basically the Leicester of Germany. And here we have our explanation.
"So, big Master Race rally this weekend. Fancy it?"
"Where is it?"
"Leicester"
"Fuck no"
"Come on, it's for the master race! It's only about an hour away"
"When is it?"
"Sunday"
"So there won't be any trains, will there? We'll have to get a rail replacement from Northampton or something"
"We could drive"
"You could drive. I'm a member of the master race, someone should be driving me"
"Right, I'll drive then. So are you coming?"
"I mean, what is it? I know it's like a rally or whatever, bit of a chant here, bit of a speech there. But, y'know, will there be a beer tent or something? Will I be able to get a drink?"
"It's not really about getting a drink"
"What about food? Will I be able to get something to eat?"
"FOR FUCK'S SAKE. It's about the innate superiority of our race, it's not about getting drunk and grabbing a fucking curry"
"Well, it would be better if it was. Look, we could have a rally of our own in the park over the road, "We're the best, we are the supermen, they are the underlings", all that, very nice, then go to the pub, get a few in, on for a curry."
They say for evil to triumph, it is only required that good people do nothing. Turn that around, though, and you see that for evil not to triumph, it is only required that bad people do nothing. See? Much better.
